One of the amazing stories of Heimaey is how the 1973 eruption of Eldfell that threatened to cut off the harbor was stopped and diverted by continuous bathing of the flow with fire hoses. Read John McPhee's extended essay in The Control of Nature (available in just about any library or bookstore).
This is where the lava stopped -- this former water tank is right on the edge of the Heimaey harbor. I have no idea why dogs are not allowed in this area!
